In keeping with the sports theme this week, I thought I would highlight our very own Colorado Aves.

Happy Independence Day

July 4th

Happy belated Independence Day! We celebrated with two of the oldest American traditions – beer and baseball. The Rockies hosted Arizona at Coor’s Field and what started as a great game quickly went downhill. Arizona handed the Rockies a rough loss. After the game ended, the rock pile and left outfield was cleared and those ticket holders were brought onto the field to watch the awesome fireworks show that took place after the game.

Bear Lake

Bear Lake

This is one of my favorite photos taken during the visit. Bear Lake is an amazing mountain lake, easily accessible by everyone. The hike to the lake is less than 500 feet and a paved path loops the lake, offering fantastic views of the snow covered mountains. The reflections in the lake were amazing. However, it did start to rain and fog and clouds moved in, covering the mountains. We decided to chance it and hike the half mile to Nymph Lake but was caught in a thunder storm. However, with views like these, how can you complain?

I hope you enjoyed this series of photos. I really enjoy having a week dedicated to a specific area or focus and I will try to begin incorporating that into my photos. If you want to see more of my Rocky Mountain National Park photos, visit my website.

Elk

Elk

At the base of the mountains, we decided to drive along Bear Lake road to find some hiking trails in the park. Not too long after turning onto the road, we came upon a line of slow cars. I turned to the right to see what the commotion was, and I saw these massive horns atop a small hill. After pulling over, I managed to get some great shots of two elk grazing along the road. After ten minutes or so, they crossed the road and headed down into a valley.

Snow in June

Snow in June

It might be June, but when you’re 12,ooo feet in the air snow knows no season. This sporadic, thin layer of snow doesn’t compare to the massive amount of snowfall that starts in October, however. This photo was taken on Trail Ridge Road, an amazing drive the wraps through the mountains. The road is closed October to June, so be prepared to only make this drive in the spring and summer.
